Ethical Sourcing
Diamonds are a delight to the eye; they are enticing and add brilliance to any jewellery. Because of their value, diamonds are one of the best-known and most sought-after gemstones. Unfortunately, this has also led to them being sourced and traded through illegal means in order to fund bloody conflicts.
The Kimberly Process
The Kimberley Process began in 2000, when South African diamond-producing states met in Kimberley, South Africa, to discuss ways to ensure diamond purchases were not funding rebel movements. In 2002 governments around the world implemented the Kimberly Process; an agreement that controls the trade of rough diamonds.
The scheme is designed to prevent conflict diamonds entering the mainstream market by controlling the flow of rough diamonds through a set of import and export rules. Every shipment of diamonds that passes a border must be numbered, sealed and be certified with proper documentation.
